The Suprapubic Operation or Litholapaxy

To the Editor of "The Indian Medical Gazette." Sir,?Lieut.-Colonel Vivian B. Bennett, in his important article 011 the treatment of vesical calculus which appeared in last November's issue of this Gazette, wrote : " In the Indian Medical Gazette of last June, Keegan has written a paper objecting strongly to the Suprapubic Operation." If Liieut.-Colonel Bennett will peruse my paper he will find that I do not object to suprapubic lithotomy qua a surgical operation. Like most surgeons I recognise the fact that in certain well-defined cases of vesical calculus suprapubic lithotomy is the operation of election. But I do most strongly object to the supplanting of litholapaxy by suprapubic lithotomy in straightforward and uncomplicated cases of stone in the bladder both in boys and male adults. And I also object to the supplanting of litholapaxy by lateral lithotomy both in boys and adult males in the general run of cases of vesical calculi which we meet with in this country. I had thought that I had made my position sufficiently plain in my paper. It is summarised with perfect accuracy in the Editorial Annotation which appeared concurrently with my paper, and which perhaps escaped Lieut.-Colonel Bennett's notice-
